They are a shut off valve using a rotary ball to control the flow of gases, liquids or compressed air, with a quarter turn movement. A 90 degree turn opens the valve and allows movement through a central bore hole.

Ball valves operate by rotating a ball 90 degrees to control the flow of media, a regular valve, or gate valve has the gate move up and down to regulate media flow. Ball valves shut off the flow quicker than a gate valve.

Butterfly valves are another quarter turn valve used to shut off flow in pipelines. They are mounted between two circular plates through a section of piping, or just the one if used at the end of a piping system. These valves can be used to start, stop or throttle the flow of media.

Each valve has its own use and one is not strictly better than the other. The choice between the two depends on the needs of the job, such as the speed of the operation, space constraints for location, flow control requirements and maintenance considerations.

Ball valves have excellent flow control and are highly reliable under extreme pressure conditions.

Butterfly valves are good for fast operating requirements, work in confined spaces and are usually less expensive to maintain.

Check valves are used to prevent backflow in a pipe. It is a one-way only valve. If the media flow somehow reverses, it will be checked, or stopped.

A diaphragm valve controls, obstructs or isolates media within a pipeline. A free floating elastomer disc can be pressed down to throttle the flow of media or isolate and shut off the flow.

The difference between the two types of valves is a diaphragm valve uses a flexible membrane and linear motion to control the flow of media through a pipe, while a butterfly uses a quarter turn rotation motion to turn a circular plate to achieve this task.

Butterfly valves are best suited for controlling the flow of media in water treatment plants, HVAC systems and general industrial processes.

Diaphragm valves are more used in situations of high corrosive, abrasive or high viscous fluids.

Plastic valves are lighter and easier to handle while installing them. They are immune to metal corrosion, due to being plastic so are ideal for corrosive environments. Similarly, they avoid limescale and sediment build up.

• For moderate pressures and temperatures, PVC-u (Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride) is used. This offers good resistance against a lot of chemicals, such as acids, bases, salts and alcohols.
• c-PVC (Chdlorinated Polyvinyl Chdloride) is similar to PVC-u, but has been chemically treated with chlorine to improve thermal and chemical resistance. Great in high temperature situations and where aggressive chemicals are present. It can also withstand mechanical stress, which is good for rigid and flexible situations.
• PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) has a wide range of resistance to chemicals, including strong acids and bases, solvents and oils. It is a widely used plastic in industries such as chemical processing, electronics, aerospace design, medical devices and more. Also highly resistant to UV radiation, high temperatures and chemicals, making it a good choice in environments where other materials may fail.
